Warm Home Discount 2026: who gets the £150 credit and when

Warm Home Discount 2026: Who Gets the £150 and When

On October 22, the UK government began sending Warm Home Discount letters, and households were told to watch their doormats. A letter about £150 off energy bills started arriving that day, and “uk government 150 energy rebate” quickly became one of Britain’s top searches. I read the GOV.UK announcement, the scheme guide and the eligibility statement side by side. Two different £150 figures float around in the coverage, so I wanted to see which one is which.

Here’s the short version: the Warm Home Discount is a one-off £150 credit on your electricity bill. It goes to people on certain benefits, not to everyone. Also, the letter is a confirmation, not an application, so most people have nothing to do. However, if your letter asks for more details, you have until February 26, 2027 to call.

Warm Home Discount 2026: who gets the £150 credit and when

Which £150 are people talking about?

The government release uses £150 for two different things. Because the headlines blur them together, plenty of readers think a cheque is on its way. Meanwhile, neither figure is a payment into your bank account.

£150 of costs taken off billsDescribed as an average across billsBuilt into what bills include, so there is nothing to claim

I think the word “rebate” causes most of the confusion. It sounds like money landing in your account. In reality, the Warm Home Discount only lowers what you owe your electricity supplier, and the cost cut is an average, so your own saving will differ. Still, the letters are real and about 6 million households across Britain should get the discount this winter.

Who qualifies for the Warm Home Discount in England and Wales?

The scheme guide lists three conditions, and all of them had to apply on August 23, 2026. That date is the qualifying date for this winter.

  1. Your energy supplier takes part in the scheme.
  2. You or your partner get a qualifying means-tested benefit.
  3. Your name, or your partner’s name, is on the electricity bill.

Next, the benefit list. GOV.UK names four qualifying benefits, and the government calls this the core group.

Housing BenefitCounts on the qualifying date
Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)Only the income-related version
Pension CreditBoth the Guaranteed element and Savings Credit

What changed compared with older years?

The announcement says every billpayer on means-tested benefits now qualifies. Before the expansion, restrictions left out many people who needed help. According to the release, nearly 2.3 million additional families got the rebate last year, including around 1 million with children. Moreover, the government says the scheme will continue through 2030/31, so this is no longer a one-year surprise.

Why does the qualifying date matter?

Ofgem’s eligibility page makes one point that many readers will miss. Anyone who was not with a participating supplier on the qualifying date, and switched to one afterwards, does not get the discount for that scheme year. Therefore, if you changed supplier recently, contact the company you were with on August 23. Ofgem suggests asking them to confirm they still hold your contact details.

From letter to credit: the dates to know

Letters arrive over about eleven weeks, so a neighbour getting one first does not mean you missed out. The dates below come straight from GOV.UK.

DateWhat happens
August 23, 2026Qualifying date for benefits, supplier and bill name
October 22, 2026Letters start to arrive
Early January 2027Last letters go out; contact the scheme if you expect one and nothing came
February 26, 2027Final day to call the helpline if your letter asks for more information
March 31, 2027Your supplier applies the discount by this date

In my view, the February deadline is the one to circle. A letter can say you “might be eligible” and ask you to phone with more details. Then life gets busy, the letter ends up in a drawer, and the money is gone. Setting a phone reminder for early February costs nothing.

Scotland, pre-pay meters and park homes work differently

The England and Wales rules cover most readers. Still, three groups follow a different path, and Northern Ireland sits outside the scheme entirely.

Scotland

Some Scottish households get the discount automatically. That includes people on Pension Credit and people who get an extra amount of Universal Credit because they or a child have a disability or health condition. Households with a child under 5 can also qualify automatically in certain situations, such as being unemployed and on Universal Credit.

Everyone else in the broader group has to apply to their electricity supplier. GOV.UK says suppliers have a limited number of discounts, so contact them early. Check even if you got the discount last year, and stay with that supplier until it pays out.

Pre-pay and pay-as-you-go meters

You can still qualify. Instead of a bill credit, your supplier may send a voucher you can use to top up the meter. Your supplier can tell you exactly how it works for you.

Park homes and Northern Ireland

Park home residents apply through a separate Park Homes Warm Home Discount route. Northern Ireland does not run the scheme, though the Housing Executive offers an Affordable Warmth scheme.

How to spot a scam before you reply

The government release closes with a warning. Recipients should use their usual way of contacting their energy supplier, and they should not follow suspicious links or enter financial details after an email, text or phone call. That advice matters because the letters keep arriving until January, which gives scammers a long window.

Here’s my reading of the scheme guide. The discount goes onto your bill, so nobody needs your card or bank details to give it to you. Consequently, any message that asks for them deserves a hard stop. If you want to call the scheme, type the GOV.UK address yourself and use the number listed there.

What to do this week

  1. Check your post for a Warm Home Discount letter, and look at your partner’s mail too.
  2. Find out which supplier you were with on August 23 and whose name is on the electricity bill.
  3. If the letter asks for more information, call the helpline well before February 26, 2027.
  4. If you expect a letter and none arrives by early January 2027, contact the scheme on 0800 030 9322 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm).
  5. In Scotland, ask your supplier now whether you need to apply.

One more point worth knowing: GOV.UK says the discount does not affect your Cold Weather Payment or Winter Fuel Payment. Meanwhile, if you are also getting the house ready for winter, our Be Ready checklist guide covers the three-day emergency kit the UK government wants at home.

Quick answers

Do I have to apply for the Warm Home Discount?

Usually not in England and Wales. The scheme matches benefit data and sends a letter, which either confirms the discount or asks you to call. In Scotland, some households must apply to their supplier.

Is the £150 paid into my bank account?

No. Your electricity supplier applies it to your bill. Alternatively, you may get it on your gas bill if one supplier provides both and you qualify.

I get Universal Credit but have no letter yet. Should I worry?

Not yet. Letters run until January 2027. However, if nothing comes by early January and you think you qualify, contact the scheme before February 26, 2027.

Which suppliers take part?

GOV.UK lists around two dozen, including British Gas, EDF, E.ON Next, Octopus Energy, OVO, ScottishPower, Utilita and Sainsbury’s Energy. Check the full supplier list for the rest.

The short version

The Warm Home Discount is a one-off £150 credit on the electricity bill of households on qualifying benefits, and the letters began arriving on October 22, 2026. Most people need to do nothing, but if your letter asks for details, call before February 26, 2027.
